WolfWave vs. Jam Deck, Cider, Now Playing & More
How WolfWave compares to Jam Deck, Cider, Now Playing, and Discord presence apps for Apple Music streamers. What each does, and where WolfWave falls short.

The short version
Most tools do one job: an overlay, a chat bot, or a Discord status. WolfWave does all of them in one Mac app, using the Apple Music app you already have.

Why WolfWave exists
On Spotify, streamers have lots of choices, because Spotify offers a public way for apps to control playback. The Apple Music app on a Mac doesn't. Tools have to talk to the Music app directly, so there are fewer of them, and most do one thing.
WolfWave does that hard part once, then builds the chat bot, requests, Discord status, and overlay on top.
vs. Jam Deck
Jam Deck is an open-source menu bar app. It reads the Apple Music app and serves a now-playing overlay for OBS.
- Same idea: it reads the real Music app.
- Smaller scope: it's an overlay. No Twitch chat commands, no song requests, no Discord status.
Pick Jam Deck if all you want is an overlay. Pick WolfWave if you also want chat, requests, and Discord in one app.
vs. Cider + cider4obs
Cider is a separate Apple Music player. cider4obs turns Cider's now-playing feed into an OBS overlay.
- The big difference: with Cider, you play music in Cider instead of the Apple Music app. WolfWave works with the Apple Music app you already use.
- Cross-platform: Cider runs on Windows and Linux too. WolfWave is Mac only.
- Chat: cider4obs is an overlay. WolfWave adds Twitch commands and song requests.
Pick Cider if you want a different Apple Music player or need Windows. Pick WolfWave if you want to keep the Apple Music app and get the full stream setup.
vs. Now Playing
Now Playing has a Twitch bot, overlays, and Discord features. It's built mainly for DJ software like Serato, rekordbox, Traktor, and Virtual DJ.
- DJs: Now Playing is made for you.
- Apple Music listeners: WolfWave is made for the Apple Music app, with song requests that play there.
vs. Spotify request bots
Bots like SpotchBot take !sr requests and add them to your Spotify queue. If you play Spotify, use one of those. WolfWave doesn't work with Spotify.
What WolfWave does instead:
!srfinds the song on Apple Music and plays it in the Apple Music app.- Viewers can still paste a Spotify or YouTube link. WolfWave reads the title and finds it on Apple Music.
vs. other kinds of tools
- Discord-only apps. MusicRPC, apple-music-discord-rpc, and discord-music-presence show your music on Discord. WolfWave does that too, plus Twitch and the overlay.
- Web overlays. Some web overlays, like Nyan's Music Overlay, support Apple Music through Cider or Last.fm. WolfWave reads the Apple Music app directly.
- Cloud chat bots. Moobot and StreamElements take song requests into their own player. They can't play songs in the Apple Music app on your Mac. WolfWave can.
What WolfWave adds
- Song requests that play in Apple Music.
!srsearches Apple Music and plays the request in the Music app. See Bot Commands. - Channel points and Bits. A managed Request a Song reward, Bit requests, and Bit boosts.
- Chat vote-skip. With a chat count or Twitch Polls.
- A locked-down overlay. Every overlay connection needs a per-install token. See Security.
- Stream Deck keys. Control requests and playback from a Stream Deck. See Stream Deck.
- Listening History. Opt-in stats and a monthly recap, kept on your Mac. See Listening History.
- Streamer Mode. Hides private values on screen. See Streamer Mode.
- Easy install and updates. A signed download or Homebrew, with automatic updates.
Where WolfWave falls short
- Mac only, and recent Macs only. You need macOS 26 (Tahoe) on Apple Silicon. No Windows, no Intel Macs.
- Apple Music only. No Spotify, YouTube Music, or Tidal playback. That's on purpose.
- A young add-on scene. The overlay format and Stream Deck API are documented, but there aren't many third-party add-ons yet.
