Back Up & Restore

Export your WolfWave settings to a JSON file, import them on another Mac, or sync them with iCloud. Sign-ins and tokens never leave the Mac.

TL;DR: Save your WolfWave settings to a file and restore them on another Mac, or turn on iCloud sync so they follow you. This page is for streamers moving to a new Mac or reinstalling.

Everything lives in Settings → Advanced → Back Up Settings.

What gets backed up

Your preferences, for example:

  • Custom bot commands: triggers, replies, aliases, cooldowns, permissions.
  • Song Request rules and blocklist: limits, cooldowns, command names, blocked songs, artists, and people, vote-skip.
  • Stream Widget look: theme, layout, colors.
  • Discord Rich Presence options: buttons, idle and pause behavior.
  • Your public Twitch channel name, so WolfWave can offer to reconnect it.
  • Everything else: notification switches, History & Stats options, appearance, Dock visibility, Streamer Mode.

What is never backed up

  • Your Twitch sign-in: access and refresh tokens and your Twitch user ID.
  • The overlay token and the Stream Deck control token.
  • System permissions, like Apple Music control and notifications. macOS grants these per Mac.
  • Your Listening History. Plays are personal data, not settings.

A backup is a plain JSON file you can open and read. It does include your custom command text, blocked titles, artists, and people, and your channel name. Only share it if you're fine sharing those.

Export your settings

  1. Open Settings → Advanced.
  2. Under Back Up Settings, click Export Settings.
  3. Pick where to save. The file is named wolfwave-settings-<date>.json.

Import your settings

  1. Open Settings → Advanced.
  2. Click Import Settings and choose a backup file.
  3. Read the review sheet. It shows how many preferences will be restored.
  4. Reconnect Twitch (only shown if the backup had a channel):
    • On: after import, WolfWave asks you to sign in to Twitch again, checks the channel exists, then saves it with your new sign-in.
    • Off: Twitch is skipped. Everything else still imports.
  5. Import local sharing and server settings (off by default):
    • Off: diagnostics sharing, the update channel, and the Stream Widget and Stream Deck server switches and ports stay as they are on this Mac.
    • On: those come from the backup too.
  6. Click Import.

What to expect:

  • It merges, it never wipes. Settings missing from the backup are left alone.
  • Changes apply right away. Appearance and update settings change at once. Launch at Login is passed to macOS. If macOS refuses it, WolfWave keeps the real setting and tells you.
  • Bad files are refused whole. An old unsupported format, or custom commands with a blank, duplicate, or clashing trigger, or cooldowns the sliders can't set: you get a message and nothing changes.
  • Odd single values are skipped. An unsafe port or queue limit is left out, and the review count only counts what will really restore.

Move to a new Mac

  1. Old Mac: click Export Settings.
  2. Copy the file over: AirDrop, iCloud Drive, a USB stick, anything.
  3. New Mac: install WolfWave, then click Import Settings.
  4. Turn on Reconnect Twitch in the review sheet and sign in once.
  5. Re-grant permissions (like Apple Music control) when macOS asks.

Sync with iCloud

Turn on Sync with iCloud and your settings follow you to every Mac that has it on. Find it in Settings → Advanced → Back Up Settings, or on the Preferences step of the setup wizard.

  • Same rules as Export. The cloud copy is the same file Export writes. Sign-ins, tokens, and permissions never sync. Each Mac still signs in to Twitch once.
  • Servers stay per Mac. Sync never brings over diagnostics sharing, the update channel, or the Stream Widget and Stream Deck server switches and ports. Turning on a server on one Mac never opens it on another.
  • Opt-in on each Mac. The switch itself doesn't sync. A new Mac starts with it off. Turn it on and the cloud copy applies right away.
  • Newest change wins. If two Macs change settings at once, the later one replaces the earlier one as a whole. Good for a stream Mac plus a desk Mac. Not for two people.
  • Stored in your iCloud, not ours. It sits in iCloud Key-Value Storage under your Apple Account. Turning the switch off stops syncing but leaves that copy there.
  • Timing depends on iCloud. WolfWave sends a change a couple of seconds after you make it. iCloud decides when other Macs get it, usually within a minute or so.

Once a sync has applied, the switch's subtitle reads Last synced … with the date and time.

Good to know

  • Reconnecting Twitch always means signing in again. Your login is never in a backup.
  • A backup from a newer WolfWave asks you to update WolfWave first.
  • Blocklist entries are cleaned on import. Blank and duplicate entries are dropped and spacing is trimmed. The date you added each one is kept.
  • Your channel name is tidied both ways. A stray space or pasted URL piece is cleaned the same way the Twitch connect screen does it.
  • The public song-list link must be an https:// address of 2,048 characters or less. A blank link clears it.
